The pit is, in essence, one long assembly line. Its southwest regions a hub of research and development, some of the most talented minds in the world hard at work improving FTL technology. This generates a tremendous amount of garbage, most of which used to be used as fill-in for the Mining operations, it is now an expensive problem that has been largely ignored by feeding it to the slums. The desperate will sift through all of it like microbes hunting the last morsels of nutrients before selling the rest of it. Some of this waste can be extremely valuable both to Outsiders and those in dire need.
The middle and northeast portions are all production. Material, suffering and ideas go in one end, parts, products and profit come out the other. Just about anything with a motor or FTL engine can be fabricated here, and their speed lets them do medium sized orders while you wait. If you can afford it they will swap your molds in across the whole Pit and turn out thousands upon thousands every hour. They did this with ships and munitions during the altercation with Germana that ended in such ecological tragedy, and many say it turned the tide of the war. The Pit is the only place remaining on earth where parts manufacturing for the Capitol class ships can still be done profitably. Much of the production has been moved to low-G, but the expense of maintenance in those environments is prohibitive. Much of these ships’ final construction must be done in low-G environments because the pieces are simply too large to move about on Earth.
